SWiRL’s vision is to tackle the inequalities currently seen within UK swimming and to reduce aquatic mortality rates within vulnerable groups.

Drowning is preventable and swimming is an essential life-saving skill for all, we aim to bridge the gaps in order to reduce the statistics. Drowning accounts for 46% of all injury deaths among autistic children, which translates to 160 times the chance of dying from drowning compared to their neurotypical peers.

  • What does SWIM do?

SWIM will fund swimming lessons in the UK for those people at a statistically greater risk of drowning, this includes but is not limited to:

Those living below the poverty line

Persons requiring accommodations due to ongoing medical conditions or disability

    Autistic and neurodivergent individuals

    BIPOC

  • Why is SWIM needed?

The communities detailed are at a greater risk of drowning than ever with access to swimming lessons severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic due to pool closures and household income. Funding options for swimming in the UK are limited.

Some of those most vulnerable to drowning are those who require accommodations for learning. With many centres unable to cater to individual support needs in group settings many are left with no option but 1-2-1 sessions, which are often cost prohibitive. Funding options for those who are autistic, or that have a learning disability, or social, behavioural and communication difficulties are few and far between.

  • How does SWIM get their funding?

SWIM is reliant on donations to cover the costs associated with providing swimming lessons. Swimming lessons reduce the likelihood of drowning by 80%, every penny received provides a life-long skill that could ultimately save lives.

We know that swimming lessons statistically reduce the likelihood of drowning but that swimming lessons aren't accessible to all, so every single penny from downloads of 5 Little Pirates will go towards funding swim lessons in our communities.
